Pastoral Care

Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers – not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be.” (1 Peter 5:2)

The King will reply, “I tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these brothers of mine, you did it for me.” (Matthew 25:40)

Pastoral care is a ‘ministry of being, not merely of doing’ – being with and listening to people in their times of confusion, joy, pain and recovery.  It also encompasses giving spiritual guidance or direction, a role which is usually assumed by the Rector and/or assistant priest.  In addition, events that focus on fellowship and prayer are a part of this ministry.

The Pastoral Care Committee encompasses many duties:

  • The Coordinating of the Parish Network Visitors (visitation of the shut-ins, the disabled and the lonely)
  • The organizing of the annual Pastoral Care Workshop
  • The planning of the All Soul’s Service
  • The provision of pastoral care for those in crisis or grieving
  • The coordinating of clergy visits/communion

Other opportunities for ministry relative to pastoral care are:

  • Helping with the Sunday Nursery during worship
  • Lending a hand during Seniors’ Dinners
  • Befriending visitors and new parish members

Our mission to care for others is best summed up in the prayer of St. Theresa of Avila.

Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
Compassion on this world,
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,
Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.
