Ascension News for November 8, 2017

Saturday, November 11
, is Remembrance Day.  We, once again, will commemorate the sacrifices of those Canadians who fought in World War I and II, and all those who have given their lives in armed conflict throughout the years in the name of freedom and peace.  (The Act of Remembrance service was held last Sunday evening.)

* Two very special services were held last week, All Souls' Service and All Saints' Service.  Special thanks to all - for Dean Bellamy's inspiring sermons, for the choir's lovely singing, (especially the anthem), for the wonderful spreads provided by the ACW, the Choir, and the Parish Network Visitors during the fellowship hours, ....for all organizers and participants.  Very moving services indeed!

*  An Advent Family Day is being planned for Saturday, November 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. During that time those gathered will explore "8 Stations of the Crib" to be used in the church during the Advent Journey.  It is open to all ages, and lunch will be provided.  Come and bring a friend!

*  Believe it or not Christmas isn't that far away.  The Diocesan Resource Centre has lovely cards, ornaments, books and nativities, that would be so wonderful as Christmas gifts.  For your shopping convenience, the Centre will be open three Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: November 18, 25, and December 2.

*  As you know, our church's mission is to reach out to others, and we have aimed to do that in many of our projects.  During the week of November 5 to 12, our Parish is partnering with the Coats for Kids/Families campaign.  During those days and during office hours (9 to noon), you may drop off your gently used coats/snow suits/pants to the Church. Thanks for your anticipated support in this project.

*  Surely, there must be parishioners out there who can play musical instruments; and hopefully, one or two of those would like to offer his/her talent during a family service once a month.  The 'Saints and Sinners,' would really appreciate having you join the group.  If you are interested, please have a chat with Mrs. Ina Kearley.

*  The food bank is always in need, and appreciates that there are so many that respond to that need. This week they are hoping to find the following items in our food bank box:  tinned vegetables, tinned pasta, and tinned beans.  A monetary donation is equally appreciated.

*  This is a reminder that our Fall Fair starts next weekend, November 18, starting with a morning coffee/tea at 9:30 a.m. Hopefully, you are all putting together things for the usual table sales:  baked goods, preserves, crafts, Christmas things, books,....  A major part of the success of the Fair depends on your donations.  Thank you for your continued help with this matter.  (Other details of the Fair are in your previous enews, and in the Chimes for those who were able to make it to church.)

*  Captains, please remind your teams:  Sidespersons' Team # 6 and Counting Team # 2.

*  Would you like to learn more about the workings of the vestry which is the elected governing body of the church?  The opportunity now exists because we need someone to fill a vacant position within that group from now until the AGM in March of 2018. If this is of interest to you, or if you need more information, please contact Canon David at the church office 368-5693.

That's it folks,
Enjoy the long weekend!
Jean (On behalf of Ascension)
