Ascension News for November 15, 2017

Maybe this is a quote to ponder as we move toward Advent and the Christmas Season.  In a similar vein of thinking, it  has been written that 'the magic of Christmas is not in the presents but in His presence.'

*  With the nearness of Advent, an Advent Family Day, "Stations of the Crib," will take place on Saturday, November 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Come and be part of the group that will explore '8 Stations of the Crib' for use in church during the Advent journey.  Open to all ages, with lunch provided.  However, please sign up if you plan to attend.

*  In the spirit of giving, we are hoping you have taken a tag or two from our Advent tree, tags which name items for the Brighter Futures Healthy Baby Club.  When your purchase is made, please place it in our play yard located in the side foyer.  You will learn more about the program on Sunday when a representative from Brighter Futures gives you some insight into the program during the 11 a.m. service.

*  PWRDF is responding to the Myanmar Crisis and calling on us for support.  The federal government will match 1:1 donations to Rohingya relief efforts through its new Myanmar Crisis Relief Fund, until November 28, 2017. The attachment to this enews gives you the different ways in which you can donate to this worthy cause.

*  The food bank thanks all those who support the needs of others.  This week they hope to receive tinned tuna, ham, chicken, or turkey, Kraft dinner, and pasta sauce when they come to pick up the contents of the food bank boxes.

*  Dinner Theater (December 1 tickets go on sale at the Fall Fair on November 18, and from the office from November 20-24.  For $30 per person, you will be served a roast turkey dinner and dessert, and be entertained by the parish staff.

*  Just a reminder - Ascension Fall Fair starts Saturday, November 18, with all events beginning at 9:30 a.m.  All details were given in the previous enews and the Chimes.  We are counting on traditional sales tables to be filled with dry goods, baked goods, preserves, crafts, Christmas things, books, .....  That all depends on your generosity in donating items to the various tables.  You can drop off your donations all week from 9 to noon and on Friday evening at 7 p.m. which is setup time.  Thanks in anticipation of a great support for the Parish Fair.

*  Then on Monday, November 20, you won't even have to cook supper if you join the Parish family for a roast beef supper at 6 p.m.  Deadline for ticket purchase is Friday, November 17 (adults $20 and children under 12 $10).  Just call Mark at 221-5352 for a ticket or two.  Hope to see you there! (Take out also available!)

*  The Fair wraps up on Tuesday, November 28, with a 7:30 p.m. card game with the usual prizes.  All you need are $6 and your own cards and baskets.  Call your card playing friends today and mark your calendar!

*  We're still waiting for a call from someone who would like to become a vestry member to fill a vacancy from now until the AGM in March of 2018.  Let Canon David know of your interest by calling the church office at 368-5693.

*  Captains, please remind your teams:  Sidespersons' team # 1, and Counting Team # 3.

*  Christmas Puddings anyone??  Our Youth are making Christmas puddings in support of their trip to attend the 2018 Clay (Canadian Lutheran Anglican Youth) gathering in Thunder Bay, ON.  If you are interested, puddings are $15 and can be picked up at the Church of the Good Shepherd on December 9.  See Rev'd Lynn to order yours today!

*  Special thanks to all those who donated coats last week.  As a result of your generosity, some people will be warmer this winter.

*  Do you remember the Christmas Tree Lighting following our Lessons and Carol Service last year?  It was a very special event where many of you donated to have a bulb lit in memory of a loved one or in honour of a special occasion.  This event is going to be repeated again this year on Sunday, December 17, following the Lessons and Carol Service.  Please submit names and donation by December 7 - minimum donation is $5.

*  I have been asked to send this message as well:  'The next Parish Network Visitors' meeting will be on Thursday, November 23, at 2 p.m. at the home of Shirley Cooper on 67 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl. We are welcoming new members.  This ministry involves the visiting of mainly shut-in seniors of our parish for an hour or so each month.  We bring a friendly face and a sense of continuity with their parish family.  For more information, contact Shirley Cooper, 368-6180, Margaret Yetman, 368-1867, or speak with the Rev'd Lynn Courage.  There are also pamphlets located in the church.

That's it folks - keep warm!
God Bless,
Jean (On behalf of the Ascension)
