Ascension News for March 14, 2018

Next Sunday
is Passion Sunday, which inaugurates a special season within Lent known as Passiontide.  During Passiontide, the last two weeks of Lent, the focus is on Jesus' last days on earth, the time when we meditate on the Passion story.  In many churches, purple veils are cast over crucifixes beginning on this day - purple representing repentance in the system of church colour symbolism.  This covering helps to set the mood of Passiontide.  May God be with you as you travel with Jesus toward his crucifixion.

*  On Sunday, March 18, during the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services, you will hear the progress report  delivered by the Worship Consulting Committee regarding the proposed changes to the nave and chancel of the church, changes that are proposed based on the concerns addressed in the 2013 Parish survey.  Feedback and questions will be made possible during the AGM on April 8

*  Godly Play will go ahead next Sunday and will cover the last three sessions of the Faces of Easter.

*  Thanks to all those who give to the food bank each week by helping to fill the food bank boxes located in the foyers.  Tea bags, sugar, and peanut butter are on their 'need' list this week.

*  Important reminder for those planning to be confirmed this year - your next class is Sunday, March 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the church and the multi-purpose room.

*  As you all know, the vestry is the elected governing body of the parish.  Together with the rector, assistant priest, wardens, and treasurer, its duty is to manage the affairs of the church.  At the Parish Annual General meeting on Sunday, April 8, the following new members will be elected to serve:  two people's wardens, two regular Synod delegates and two alternate Synod delegates, four people for a three-year term, one person for a one-year term, and a treasurer.  If you think you would like to be part of this important governing body, please contact one of the clergy or Tom (current people's warden)  at 368-0656.

Lenten Study will go ahead today at 10:15 a.m. following Holy Communion.  This week in the "Opening Doors in Lent" study, our special guest will be from the John Howard Society.  The Lenten Evening Liturgy at 7 p.m. will be led by Sidespersons' Association.

*  Special thanks to Rev'd Lynn and all other volunteers who helped to make the 'Scoff, Scuff, and Rug Hooking' night so much fun.  Have a look at our Parish website to get an idea of the awesome event!

*  The next Parish Network Visitors meeting will be on Thursday, March 22, at 2 p.m. at the home of Shirley Cooper on 67 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl.  We are welcoming new members.  This special ministry involves the visiting of mainly shut-in seniors of our parish for about an hour or so each month.  We bring a friendly face and a sense of continuity with their parish family.  For more information contact Shirley (368-6180), Margaret (369-1867), or Rev'd Lynn at the church office.  There are also pamphlets located in the church.

*  On the occasion of the 23rd Anniversary Day of Hindu Temple, the Spiritual Enhancement Committee is planning to host the Thirteenth Annual Multi-faith Symposium on Spirituality on Saturday, May 12, 2018.  The theme for the Symposium is "Forgiveness as a path to Spiritual Growth." The Symposium will be from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There will be a coffee break and lunch will be served at the end.  This is an advance notice in case you are interested and want to mark your calendar.  When the program has been finalized, it will be sent to you.  You can register any time by e-mailing Dr. Sanjay Ralhan at

*  The ACW would like you to keep Monday, April 2, open.  They are having an afternoon tea (2 o'clock) and card party!  They are giving you advance notice as they know you wouldn't want to miss it.  Of course, there will be grab bags, a jewellery and hand/shoulder bag table, as well as a bake table.  Mark your calendars today!

*  Captains, please remind your teams:  Sidespersons' Team # 4 and Counting Team # 4. New schedules are available, so please make sure everyone on your team has one.

*  Vestry members, your monthly meeting will be on Thursday, March 22, at 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose room.  This will be your last meeting before the AGM.

God Bless you all,
Jean (On behalf of Ascension)
