Choir Performance in July


On Sunday, July 1 we will host the University of Redlands Chapel Singers at our 11 am service. They will be in the province participating in Podium, a music festival happening in St. John’s at that time. Please mark your calendars to attend this service and invite your friends and family. 

Nicholle Andrews, B.Mus., B.Mus. Ed., M.Mus.,D.Mus                                                     

Originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Dr. Nicholle Andrews is Director of Choral Studies at the University of Redlands. Under her direction, the choral ensembles at Redlands have performed at national and international festivals. She is in high demand across North America as a conductor, adjudicator, and clinician.


Andrews has worked with composers William Bolcolm, Joan Tower, Libby Larson, Gunther Schuller, Imant Raminsh, R. Murray Schafer, alcides lanza, and Krzysztof Penderecki, and eminent conductors Bramwell Tovey, Sir David Willcox, Bobby McFerrin, Tõnu Kaljuste, Georg Titner, Lydia Adams, and Jon Washburn. Under her direction, choirs at the University of Redlands have been invited to perform at festivals and conferences such as the National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO) Convention, California Music Educators Association (CMEA) Convention, California All State Music Educators Conference (CASMEC)  and Festival 500 Sharing the Voices. In September 2017, her choir performed with legendary rock group The WHO, and in July 2018, the University of Redlands Chapel Singers under Andrews direction, will perform at Podium, Choral Canada’s national biennial conference.


At the University of Redlands, Andrews’ areas of specialization include choral conducting and ear training. She also offers graduate seminars on performance anxiety, score study, rehearsal technique, an undergraduate course on understanding contemporary music titled Ear Cleaning, and a Freshmen Music Seminar. Andrew has received recognition for her outstanding teaching as the recipient of Advisor of the Year, Professor of the Year, and Faculty Outstanding Service Award.


Andrews is currently training as a body mapping clinician (Andover Educator). Her areas of research include the study of performance anxiety in musicians, pitch perception, and awareness of the body through conducting. Her publications can be found in sources such as the Journal of Research in Music Education.


In January 2013, Andrews created the University of Redlands Youth Choir as a training program for children from surrounding communities, and music education students at the university. The program is now in its fifth year and has grown in numbers allowing the creation of a training chorus (ages 5-8) as a feeder ensemble for the youth choir (ages 9-16).


Having completed her doctorate and master’s in choral conducting at McGill University, Andrews studied with Professor Iwan Edwards, John Baboukis, and Julian Wachner. While at McGill University she taught musicianship, instrumental conducting and choral conducting. She completed a double Bachelors of Music in oboe performance and music education at Memorial University of Newfoundland where she studied conducting with Douglas Dunsmore.


Andrews has taught music (kindergarten to grade 12) in several public schools throughout Canada and England.

The University of Redlands Chapel Singers is an advanced 25-voice chamber choir composed of undergraduate and graduate students. Founded in 1965, the ensemble has a long tradition of musical excellence. Chapel Singers regularly performs concerts, church services, and educational workshops in Southern California. The ensemble has toured extensively in the United States and internationally. Under the direction of Dr. Nicholle Andrews the Chapel Singers performed at the California Music Educators Conference, the Sixth National Collegiate Choral Organization convention in Portland, Oregon as well as the 2016 California All-State Music Education Conference in San Jose. In the summer of 2018, Chapel Singers will be the only American choir invited to perform at Podium, Choral Canada’s Biannual National Convention in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Performing a wide variety of repertoire, Chapel Singers was featured on the hit series Glee, as well as performed with The WHO in the Los Angeles during their 2017 tour.
