Ascension News for September 26, 2018

Welcome Autumn with all its beauty, and Welcome Home to Ascension!

This past Sunday was 'Welcome Back Sunday' which is referred to by some as 'Welcome Home Sunday.'
Once more we are ready to settle into our ministries and resume our various organizations.  For those who were at church on Sunday, you would have heard of the many and varied opportunities for fellowship and service available at Ascension.  Of course, it is never too late to gather more information via the office, from any member of the parish family, or even by a question in a response to this email.

*  Mrs. Kearley continues to welcome new members to join the choirs.  The junior choir meets on Wednesdays from 5:45 to 6:15 p.m.; and senior choir also meets on Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

*  Many of you are looking forward to Ascension Cafe which always took place on Sunday mornings following the 8:30 a.m. service.  It cannot resume until we have volunteers to host on a monthly rotation - to help set up for the breakfast, serve, and clean up.  Please call Rev'd Lynn at 682-8500 if you would like to be part of this ministry.

Confirmation registration began last Sunday and will continue until October 7.  To be confirmed in the spring, candidates must be 11 years of age by the end of this year.

*  For those who have been inquiring about the fall Bible study, the date has been set - October 9!  The Bible Study will begin on that Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Ascension for five weeks.  This will be a joint ministry with the parish of the Good Shepherd.  The same Bible study will follow on Wednesday morning at 10:15 following Eucharist for a five-week period.
All are welcome!  We learn, we discuss, we share, and we also enjoy the fellowship, and a tea/coffee/treat break.
*  With the extra money needed as school resumes, many families find it difficult to make ends meet.  Please remember them when you do your grocery shopping.  This week the food bank would welcome crackers, cereal, and tinned soup. For those who may be new to the church, the food bank boxes are located in both foyers of the church.  Thanks for your continued help.

* 'Ride for Refuge' takes place on Saturday, September 29, so if you plan to participate or donate, please remember to register or contact Canon David.

'The Bishop's Dinner' hosted by Bishop Peddle will take place at the CLB Armoury on Harvey Road on November 9, 2018.  This event will include the Bishop's Award of Merit Recipients. Entertainment will be supplied by the CLB Band. The meal (at 6:30 for 7 p.m.) consists of an appetizer, stuffed chicken breast dinner, and dessert.  The cost is $40 and is being sold on first come basis by calling Elizabeth at 576-6697 or emailing

*  The Diocesan Synod 2018 takes place on November 8 to 10 and will be held at the Church of All Saints in Foxtrap.  Billet hosts are needed for those coming from Labrador and the Trinity/Placentia area.  If you are interested, please read the attachment to this email which gives you the necessary information.  Thanks so much in anticipation of your help.

*  Youth group began last Friday!  For those who attended and those who plan to attend future gatherings, here is a list of the dates as well as the planned events:
    -  October 5, (Good Shepherd), games night including video games
    -  October 19, (Ascension), guest speaker
    -  November 2, Bowling (location to be announced later)
    -  November 30, (Good Shepherd), Christmas card making for seniors - wear your ugly Christmas sweaters
    -  December 14, Visit Pearl House to deliver Christmas cards and visit seniors.
(More details will follow prior to the scheduled event.)

*  Thanks
to all those who participated and those who helped to make Welcome Back Sunday such a successful event.  Check the parish Facebook for a few pictures!)

*  Captains, please remind your teams:  Sidespersons' Team # 4, and Counting Team # 8.

That's it, folks!
God Bless you all,
Jean (On behalf of Ascension)
