Ascension News for October 3, 2018

Thanksgiving Day as a specific calendar day is next Monday, October 8.  However, every day should be a day of Thanksgiving - not one day goes by when God is not blessing us.  So let's thank Him always for His many Blessings.

*  There are several Events taking place at Ascension in celebrating Thanksgiving.  As usual, our church will be decorated to reflect our thankfulness to God for His many blessings.  Therefore, as in previous years, we would like you to help with the decorating on Saturday, October 6, from 10 until 11 a.m. Items such as vegetables, preserves, baked goods, berries, cut flowers, etc would be appreciated to display our thankfulness in a visible way.  Hope to see you there!

*  Our traditional Jiggs Dinner will take place on Tuesday, October 16, in the auditorium  (one sitting at 6 p.m. but take-out dinners will be available).  Only 150 tickets ($20 per adult and $10 for children under 12) will be sold.  So if you would like to join your parish family and enjoy an awesome dinner, please purchase or book by calling the church by Wednesday, October 10.

*  For those who love a card party, one will be held on Tuesday, October 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium.  Admission is just $6. but you may like to bring a little extra cash as thanksgiving goods will also be sold at that time. As usual - your own cards and baskets are required.

*  A reminder!!  Confirmation Registration is ongoing and will be until October 7.  Candidates must be 11 years of age by the end of this year.

*  A reminder to the youth group that October 5 is our next get-together.  It's a games' night (including video games) and it will take place at the Church of the Good Shepherd from 7 to 9 p.m.  Come and bring a friend!  In case you are wondering, you don't need to be an Anglican to be part of the group.

*  Our Sunday Evening Services will resume on October 14 at 6:30 p.m.

*  The food bank is hoping to find a variety of tinned vegetables, tinned pasta, and tinned beans in our food bank boxes when they arrive to pick them up this week.  Thanks so much!!

*  If you are interested in our five-week Bible Study, please mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 9 at 7 p.m. at the Ascension.  (This is a joint ministry with the Good Shepherd.) The same Bible Study will also take place on Wednesday morning following Eucharist which is 10:15 a.m.

*  Captains, please remind your teams:  Sidespersons' Team # 5 and Counting Team # 1.

*  If you are planning to be part of a ministry at the church, maybe you would like to assist with the Every Member Visitation.  This visitation will take place from October 15 to December 15, 2018.  The roles for the visitation include telephone visiting, home visiting with active/retired clergy, hosting a kitchen table discussion in your home, or hosting a Facebook group discussion.  If you are interested, there will be a training session on Saturday, October 13, from 10 until noon.  You can sign up at the office, or if you need more information, please contact Canon David.

*  Kudos to all those involved in the 'Ride for Refuge' that took place last Saturday. To date, they have raised over $3200 and there is still time to donate to this worthy PWRDF cause.  Check out the facebook for a couple of pictures of the event.

*  We are still looking for volunteers to help with the Ascension Cafe.  There are already four people that have agreed to bake the bread.  Each bread baker and his/her team will do one Sunday per month.  So if you would like to be on one of those teams, just contact Rev'd Lynn at 682-8500.  Just one Sunday per month to help set up, serve, and clean up is all that is required.  Thanks in anticipation of your help with this wonderful ministry!

*  For a number of years now,  the Mount Pearl Minor Hockey has held a Community Food Drive in support of our local food banks.  Many people have helped with this Drive, but there is always need of more volunteers in order to cover the entire City.  If you would like to help with this event, please read the attached email from Paul Lane which will give you all the details.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Jean (On behalf of Ascension)
