Ascension News for December 5, 2018

The word 'Advent' means 'coming.'  In that sense, Advent is marked by a spirit of expectation, of anticipation, and of preparation.  Each week an additional candle is lit.  As the light gets brighter, we are reminded that the 'Light of the World' will soon arrive.

Lots of special things are happening at church to help with our Advent journey.  Beginning today, December 5, a Bible Study 'God with Us' is taking place from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by Stations of the Crib.  Come and join us!

*  Also, you are reminded of the special Advent Project 'St. Margaret's Boat.'  Items are gradually accumulating - personal care items for men in need who reside in and around our community.  These items (for example men's socks, hats, mitts, deodorant, razors, shampoo, shaving gel, etc) will be presented to the John Howard Society at a later date.  Thanks so much for your support.

*  Of course, the children and the young at heart are excited about this coming Saturday, December 8, as 'Breakfast with Santa' will be taking place in the church auditorium from 9 to 11 a.m.  There will be a Christmas sing-along, loot bags, and naturally a visit from Santa.  You can obtain tickets at the church office the rest of this week from 9 to noon.

*  As in previous years, anyone wishing to give a Christmas Memorial can call the church office at 368-5693 or put the appropriate information and donation in a plain envelope and place in the collection place on Sunday.  If you want the names included in the Christmas bulletin insert, you must have it submitted by Monday, December 17.

*  There is also another way to remember your loved ones who have passed on.  On December 18, at 6:30 p.m. there will be a Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and Carol Sing.  You can light a bulb in memory of your loved one or in honour of a special occasion for a minimum donation of $5 per bulb per person or occasion.  Please submit names and donations on or before December 18.  Bring your family and friends and enjoy an evening of carol singing and even hot chocolate.

*  In connection with the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, this year the invitation has been offered to all churches in Mount Pearl, as well as businesses and organizations.  The open offering for the service will be given to Thrive Community Youth Network for their work with O'Donel High School, and their continuing efforts to provide support and care for vulnerable youth.Guests invited include the Mayor of Mount Pearl, the clergy of Mount Pearl Ministerial, Thrive Executive Director and Programme workers, as well as the staff from O'Donel High.
*  The Christmas Hamper Program continues this Christmas.  If you would like to participate by providing a food item for a Christmas dinner, please take a tag or two from the Advent tree just inside the church doors - each tag names a food item needed for the hampers.  You can return your item to the church from Friday, December 14 to Sunday, December 16.  (No food items can be accepted after that date.)  If you need more information, please contact Georgina at or 682-7928.

*  As you have heard by now, the Christmas Pageant will be taking place at the 11 a.m. service on December 23.  It is important that all children participating attend Godly Play in the coming weeks to practice for this special event.  Need more information? Please call Doreen at 364-1454.
*  The food bank continues to have need of items.  This week they are hoping for toilet tissue, tinned milk, and tinned tomatoes.  A monetary donation is also appreciated if you prefer to help in that way.  Thanks again for all your help.

*  Captains, please remind your teams:  Sidespersons' Team #2 and Counting Team #2.

*  Do you like Christmas puddings?  If you do, and you're not in the mood to make one, the Church of the Good Shepherd is taking orders for their annual Christmas puddings.  Of course, they make great gifts as well.  To order, please call the church of the Good Shepherd office at 747-1022 - but you must do so by tomorrow as they are making them this coming weekend.

* The Seniors' Event on Monday evening was simply wonderful.  Such great food, such lovely entertainment by our youth, such fun to have the mummers and Mr. and Mrs. Claus visit, and overall such great fellowship among our parish family in a very festive atmosphere created by Denise.   Special thanks to all those who donated the food, to those who helped prepare, to those who served and cleaned up, and to Mrs. Kearley who organized the whole event.  An evening to remember for sure!!  *=D> applause  Check out our Parish Facebook to see pictures of the Event!

May God be with you on your Advent journey,
Jean (On behalf of Ascension)
