Ascension News for November 20, 2019

Friday, November 22, is the 'Feast of St. Cecilia,' a Christian martyr of the third century.  She is known as the patron saint of music and musicians.  Many feel that music has the power to quiet the heart and inspire the soul.  E. Hays refers to music as 'a prayer for the ears.'  In her honour, why not play or listen to some beautiful music on Friday.

*  Many of you have attended the community suppers and have thoroughly enjoyed the food and the fellowship.  The next community supper is this evening, November 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Park Place and is hosted by Park Avenue Pentecostal church.  Come and enjoy the supper and the wonderful fellowship that the event provides.

*  The Seniors' Christmas supper will be held on December 2 in the auditorium.  We are hoping some of you will be able to assist the youth of the parish by providing either a pot of soup or a dessert.  To assist, just take a label from the 'gold tree'" at the main entrance of the church.  When you do, please write your name and telephone number on the sheet by the tree to name the item you will donate.  On the evening of the event, you can drop your donation at the auditorium between 4 and 6 p.m.  Thanks for your anticipated support!

*  The Advent Season is just around the corner.  As in previous years, there will be an Advent Family Activity Day on Saturday, November 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  If you plan to attend, please sign up on the sheet provided in the front and side foyers.

*  Last Sunday via the Chimes and during the service you were informed of the Advent Project - St. Margaret's Boat. The confirmation class and the congregation are partnering with Network Cafe to donate gifts.  To participate, select a tag from one of the stockings displayed in the church, purchase the item, gift wrap it, and fill out a Christmas tag with the initials which will be on the tag you select, and place it in the boat.  On December 15 at the 11 a.m. service these gifts will be presented.  Your generosity will be greatly appreciated.

*  On Sunday, November 24, you will be given the opportunity to see a large story demonstrated by Godly Play at the front of the church.  You are also reminded that the Christmas Pageant will be on December 22 - parts and costumes will be designated for children who are able to participate.  If you still need information, please call Doreen at 364-1454 or ask any of the Godly Play teachers on Sunday mornings.

*  You all have heard about CLAY (Canadian Lutheran Anglican Youth).  Several youth are hoping to attend.  To help offset the cost of travel to Calgary in 2020, the youth group will be selling Christmas puddings at $15 each.  If you wish to purchase one or two, please use the sign-up sheets located in both church foyers.  Puddings will be available around December 8.

*  This week, the food bank has indicated they would like to find crackers, cereal, and tinned soup in our food bank boxes.  A monetary donation to the hamper fund is also appreciated!  Thanks so much for your continual generosity to those in need.

Next Sunday, November 24, there will be an evening service (Holy Eucharist) at 6:30 p.m.

*  All are welcome to the Advent Bible Study which will begin on Wednesday, November 27, at 10 a.m. The study is entitled 'Shine! Light for All People,' and will be followed by 'The Stations of the Crib.'
(The Study continues on December 4, 11 and 18.)
*  Captains, please remind your teams:  Sidespersons' Team # 3 and Counting Team # 4.

*  'A Country Christmas' is being presented by the Secrets and our senior choir on Friday, November 29.  Tickets ($20 each) are available on Sundays following the services and during the week from the church office.

*  Please don't forget to pick up your advent letter and church envelopes which are located at the church entrances.  It would be a great help if you could also take any packages that you are able to deliver in your area.  Thanks so much!

*  If you are interested in knowing about 'Queen's College Winter 2020 Opportunities for Learning and Discernment' please call (709) 753-0116 or

*  Again this year our parish will be helping families in need by providing Christmas hampers - hampers that include groceries for Christmas dinner, as well as gifts for the children in the family.  You can register to receive a hamper by calling 368-5693.  If you would like to provide one of these hampers, please call the church office and leave your name and number.  Someone will call you and give you further details.  Thanks for your support!

*  The next Parish Network Visitors' meeting will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27, at the home of Shirley Cooper, 67 Commonwealth Avenue (368-6180) and   New members are always welcome.  If you would like to know more about this ministry, please contact the clergy.

*  For those who attended the roast beef dinner on Monday evening, I am sure you will agree it was an awesome meal and a time of great fellowship.  Special thanks to the Men's Service Club as they did all the cooking!! Thanks also to all those who helped with the serving and clean up.  It was a lovely evening indeed!

Message for the youth group:  Our next get-together is Friday, November 22, at the Church of the Good Shepherd at 7 p.m.

Jean (On behalf of the Ascension)
